How alkaline compounds control atmospheric aerosol particle acidity

Abstract. The acidity of atmospheric particulate matter regulates its mass, composition, and toxicity has important consequences for public health, ecosystems climate. Despite these broad impacts, the global distribution evolution aerosol particle are unknown. We used comprehensive multiphase chemistry–climate model EMAC (ECHAM5/MESSy Atmospheric Chemistry) to investigate main factors that control uncovered remarkable variability unexpected trends during past 50 years in different parts world. Aerosol decreased strongly over Europe North America decades while at same time it increased Asia. Our simulations revealed related changes phase partitioning nitric acid, production sulfate aqueous aerosols, hygroscopicity. It is hygroscopicity (κ) many regions following pH. Overall, we find alkaline compounds, notably ammonium a lesser extent crustal cations, regulate pH on scale. Given importance particles energy budget, cloud formation, pollutant deposition, species hold key strategies air quality climate change.
